New adventures released: Sequels to Dragon of Icespire Peak

Sequels! The recent release of the DnD Essentials kit  came with a code for D&DBeyond so you could read the adventure online. Its a pretty cool new thing happening in the dnd world, but even more recently they announced additional free adventures available. Storm Lords Wrath  - Starting at level 7 Sleeping Dragons Wake  - Starting at level 9 Divine Contention  - Starting at level 11 This is a direct sequel to Dragon of Icespire Peak adventure, set in Phandalin, and the adventure takes the players to the next closest town Leilon. Its a coastal town, and the adventures seem pretty interesting, so I am planning to run them as a continuation of my current campaign. I will likely write an article about Leilon at some point, and I also found this fantastic article about the town which collates a ton of information from historical dnd books. Check it out https://my-realms.blogspot.com/2014/12/starter-set-sandbox-15-leilon-and-night.html

Rebuilding Tresendar Manor

Image
Tresendar Manor Tresendar Manor is a ruined home and dungeon in the town of Phandalin. Early in "Lost Mine of Phandalin", the players are tasked with clearing out a group of bandits known as the Redbrand from the basement. Here's how the adventure describes it: Which isnt saying much really other than "its a basement dungeon only". The adventure moves along quickly, and I believe much later it mentions the idea of giving the deed to a player as a reward, but no other lore or guidance is given. In my game, one of the players had aspirations to become the mayor of Phandalin, and he immediately was interested in trying to own and rebuild the place. It went pretty swell, so the rest of this blog post is going to be dedicated to Rebuilding Tresendar Manor. (like the title says). Manor Lore LMoP doesnt give a DM much to work with, but some google searching can lead you to the wiki where it lays out some additional details: The Tresendar Family was a ro...

My players are as follows: " Garon Halforcen " - Halfling Rogue - Criminal " Aeras " - Air Genasi Druid - Sage " Brice " - Aasimar Paladin - Folk Hero " Pheonix Falconflight " - Human Fighter - Noble (he has the best name by far, first time player too!) " Kaalia " - Silver Dragonborn Sorcerer - Outlander Today we will be starting at a strange point: In the final dungeon of LMoP, Wave Echo Cave. I will use the numbered rooms in my writing below to help orient The players had been gathered up with Gundren Rockseekers' cart of goods, along with Sildar as a DMNPC. The players were following a map to the mines tha...

LMoP DM Blog II: Wave Echo Cave Part II

Image
Wave Echo Cave: Part II Game happened on 9/25/2019 Today I'm going to continue the DM blog about my starter kit campaign. Recap To recap the previous session: my players found Wave Echo Cave and began exploring. They met the Black Spider and agreed to help him in order to save Nundren Rockseekers life. We ended the session after the Flameskull fight. Bold numbers in parenthesis below refer to room numbers on this map. This Session We started in the flameskull room (12) . The players seemed to expect that the forge in here was the fabled "Forge of Spells", and asked to do some arcana checks only to find the plane non-magical. They did notice that the fallen skull was still alive with magical energy though, and the Warrior Pheonix decided to cut it in half with his greataxe. I decided to allow this to finally kill the Flameskull. Next, they found the watery portion of the cave (16) , and I described this room as the source of the echo they had been hear...

Combining Lost Mine of Phandelver and Dragon of Icespire Peak

This blog post will detail my experiences DMing a campaign where I merged together the  D&D Starter set  and the more recent  D&D Essentials Kit . The D&D Starter set  was released in July 2014, years before I got into the hobby. Included in the box is the adventure named "Lost Mine of Phandelver" (LMoP), which is widely regarded as one of the best 5e published modules. Its a pretty standard adventure with some rough edges, but overall its a great introduction to playing Dungeons and Dragons. It tells a story about a legendary mine and occurs around a frontier town named Phandalin, located south of Neverwinter. This adventure takes the players from level 1 to 5. The D&D Essentials Kit was released in June 2019. The included adventure is named "Dragon of Icespire Peak" (DoIP) and tells a similar story set in the same area as the Starter Kit. Again, the adventure is based in Phandalin, but this story is more about an Ice Dragon named "C...
